Bill Beatty has been a head coach before, so being in charge is nothing new.
But that was in baseball, and Beatty is entering his first season as a football head coach. That begins Aug. 11 when his Windsor team travels to Heritage for the first game of the season.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m real excited about the opportunity,” Beatty said. “They came to me about the middle of last year and asked me about the possibility of doing that. I’m retired, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, so I’m really excited.
“I’m feeling it right now because there’s a lot of stuff going on getting ready for camp and a lot of logistics that I haven’t had to take care of before. I’ve been a head baseball coach for a long time, so I know a little bit about organization and that type thing. We’re ready to get cranked up.”
Beatty says he is “cautiously optimistic” about the team, and that starts with quarterback Robert Coleman. A senior who transferred to Windsor from Warner Robins, Coleman’s freshman season was spent on a Demons team that included Beatty as an assistant coach.
Beatty worked at Warner Robins for 13 years.
“He’s a pretty good player. He’s the strongest guy on our team, a great runner and has a strong arm,” Beatty said. “So we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do for us.”
Coleman thinks the familiarity with his head coach will help him get ready to lead the Knights’ offense, and Coleman has high hopes for his unit.
“It’s making the play calls really easy. We’re clicking pretty fast. We’ve got a fast offense, and everything’s going really smooth,” Coleman said. “So far we’re looking pretty good. Right now, we’ve got a lot of work to do, but I feel like we’re going to do good this year.”
