Soccer: South Forsyth girls fall at Grayson in state semifinals
LOGANVILLE – A crossbar, a great save and a foot too far.
Those are the results of just some of the chances the South Forsyth girls soccer team had at tying their Class 7A state semifinal match against Grayson, but it was all for not as the Lady War Eagles fell 1-0 Tuesday night at Grayson Community Stadium.
“Couldn’t find the back of the net,” South Forsyth coach Tom Braun said. “Bottom line.”
Grayson (18-3) took the lead in the 58th minute off a corner kick by sophomore Ally Shoemaker that was scored via a header from junior Amina Cufurovic.
After that, it was all South.
Their first near miss came off a corner kick of their own in the 67th minute that was on its way to the back of the net, just under the crossbar after a Lady War Eagle got her head on it above the scrum, that was until the Grayson goalkeeper snagged it just before it crossed the goal line.
Less than two minutes later, South senior Megan Postell got her foot on a cross, but it dinged the crossbar and bounced right to the Grayson goalkeeper.
In the 81st minute, senior Gabby Tanjuatco timed her run past the Lady Rams’ defense perfectly, but the through pass was just a touch too far as the Grayson goalkeeper came off her line to pounce on the ball just before Tanjuatco’s outstretched foot could make contact.
“We couldn’t muster anything,” Braun said. “We had balls cleared off the line, off the goal post. Totally dominated the game and couldn’t find the back of the net. That’s soccer.”
The Lady War Eagles had several more chances down the stretch off corners, free kicks and a couple great passes as the ball hardly left the Grayson end of the pitch the last 15 minutes of the match, but South (18-4) ran out of time.
As the final horn went off and the Grayson fans stormed the field in celebration, the No. 2 girls soccer team in the state saw their season end short.
“It’s been a great season,” Braun said. “These kids’ goal was to win the whole thing, and they know they have the ability to win the whole thing.
“You got to be good, you got to be lucky, you got to catch breaks and unfortunately we weren’t lucky tonight.”
