Rankings rundown: Week 9

Every Sunday, the AJC releases its top 10 polls for both boys and girls. Here’s a rundown of those teams and where they’re at at this point in the season.

Boys

1. South Atlanta (18-1)

Region record: 8-0 in Region 6 (first place)

Notes: The Hornets went 2-0 over the weekend against league opponents, including a 67-51 win at No. 9 Therrell. They’ll play at KIPP on Tuesday before hosting No. 8 Hapeville Charter on Friday.

2. Butler (13-5)

Region record: 8-1 in Region 4 (first place)

Notes: The Bulldogs edged No. 8 Josey 67-61 on Friday, three days after beating then-No. 7 Glenn Hills 67-60 in overtime. Up next is No. 4 Laney at home on Tuesday.

3. Thomasville (12-6)

Region record: 5-0 in Region 1 (first place)

Notes: The Bulldogs wen 3-0 last week, including edging Fitzgerald 74-69 on Friday. They travel to Bainbridge on Tuesday for a non-region game.

4. Laney (12-4)

Region record: 4-2 in Region 4 (third place)

Notes: The Wildcats went 2-0 last week, including a 59-55 win over then-No. 7 Glenn Hills. They play No. 2 Butler on Tuesday.

5. Dublin (16-4)

Region record: 6-0 in Region 3 (first place)

Notes: The Fighting Irish went 2-0 with a pair of double-digit wins over Bleckley County and East Laurens. They host Northeast on Tuesday.

6. Josey (15-5)

Region record: 4-4 in Region 4 (tied for fifth place)

Notes: The Eagles fell short at No. 2 Butler, losing 67-61 on Jan. 20. They’ll travel to Screven County on Tuesday.

7. Early County (14-5)

Region record: 4-2 in Region 1 (tied for second place)

Notes: The Bobcats went 1-1 last week, suffering an upset 60-55 loss on the road at the hands of Terrell County, then rebounding to beat Seminole County 55-36. They travel to Brooks County on Tuesday before hosting No. 3 Thomasville on Friday.

8. Hapeville Charter (13-5)

Region record: 7-1 in Region 6 (second place)

Notes: The Hornets went 3-0 last week with wins over Douglass, B.E.S.T. and KIPP. They host Washington on Tuesday before traveling to top-ranked South Atlanta on Friday.

9. Therrell (11-7)

Region record: 5-3 in Region 6 (third place)

Notes: The Panthers beat Washington and lost to South Atlanta last week, though they played the state’s top-ranked team close, falling 62-57. They host Douglass on Tuesday.

10. Chattooga (18-1)

Region record: 10-0 in Region 7 (first place)

Notes: The Indians are on a 14-game win streak and their only loss came Dec. 10 at unranked Calhoun of AAA, 62-47. They racked up three double-digit wins over league competition against Armuchee, Rockmart and Model. They travel to Dade County on Tuesday.

Girls

1. Laney (19-1)

Region record: 9-0 in Region 4 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Wildcats shutdown their competition last week with blowout wins over Washington (77-37), Westside (89-15) and Glenn Hills (95-32). They travel to Butler on Tuesday.

2. Dodge County (17-2)

Region record: 8-0 in Region 3 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Indians went 3-0 last weekend with wins over Southwest, East Laurens and West Laurens. The host Washington County on Tuesday.

3. Rabun County (19-1)

Region record: 7-0 in Region 8 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Wildcats picked up a pair of league wins over Oglethorpe County and Putnam County. They host Monticello on Tuesday.

4. Vidalia (17-3)

Region record: 8-1 in Region 2 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Indians take a nine-game win streak into their home game Tuesday against Jeff County after going 3-0 last week against Bacon County, St. Vincent’s and Brunswick.

5. Model (15-5)

Region record: 10-0 in Region 7 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Blue Devils were humbled by A-public powerhouse and No. 3-ranked Wesleyan in an 81-46 loss on Saturday. They’ll look to get back on track on Tuesday at Gordon Central.

6. Fitzgerald (13-2)

Region record: 5-1 in Region 1 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Purple Hurricane went 2-1 last week, losing to Tift County, then rebounding to beat Thomasville and Brooks County. They travel to Irwin County on Thursday.

7. Heard County (16-4)

Region record: 6-0 in Region 5 (first place)

Notes: The Lady Braves extended their win streak to six games after going 2-0 last week over Spencer and Callaway. They host Temple on Tuesday.

8. Bryan County (14-3)

Region record: 8-2 in Region 2 (tied for second place)

Notes: The Lady Redskins went 2-0 last week against Metter and Toombs County. They’ll travel to Swainsboro on Tuesday.

9. Dade County (15-6)

Region record: 7-3 in Region 7 (third place)

Notes: The Lady Wolverines won at least two games last week (Pepperell and Coosa) and their Saturday rematch with Coosa went unreported. They host Chattooga on Tuesday.

10. Banks County (13-6)

Region record: 5-2 in Region 8 (second place)

Notes: The Lady Leopards went 2-0 last week against Monticello and Social Circle. They’ll travel to Elbert County on Tuesday, then to No. 3 Rabun County on Friday.
