Rankings rundown: Week 8

Every Sunday, the AJC releases its top 10 polls for both boys and girls. Here’s a rundown of those teams and where they’re at at this point in the season.
Boys
1. South Atlanta (15-1)
Region record: 6-0 in Region 6 (first place)
Notes: The Hornets survived in Columbus on MLK Day, beating AAAA’s Shaw 75-71. Up next is Douglass on Tuesday. For more on the Hornets, check out a feature on them from Monday, “Top-ranked South Atlanta boys big on team chemistry“.
2. Butler (11-5)
Region record: 6-1 in Region 4 (first place)
Notes: The Bulldogs extended their win streak to four with a 90-39 win over Harlem on Friday. They have two home games this week: No. 7 Glenn Hills on Tuesday and No. 8 Josey on Friday.
3. Laney (11-3)
Region record: 3-1 in Region 4 (second place)
Notes: The Wildcats are 4-0 since losing to No. 8 Josey on Dec. 21, most recently beating Evans 64-47 on Monday. They play Glenn Hills on Friday.
4. Thomasville (9-6)
Region record: 4-0 in Region 1 (first place)
Notes: The Bulldogs beat No. 5 Early County 73-67 on Friday and are now the only unbeaten in Region 1. They’ll take a three-game win streak to Pelham on Tuesday.
5. Early County (13-4)
Region record: 4-2 in Region 1 (third place)
Notes: The Bobcats are on a two-game skid, losing both of their back-to-backs last week, the first 73-67 at No. 4 Thomasville, then 83-77 at home to unranked Fitzgerald in overtime. They’ll look to get back on track Tuesday at Terrell County.
6. Dublin (14-4)
Region record: 4-0 in Region 3 (second place)
Notes: The Fighting Irish are behind Bleckley County (7-0) in Region 3 only because of lack of league games played. They’ll take an eight-game win streak to unranked Bleckley County on Friday.
7. Glenn Hills (13-5)
Region record: 5-2 in Region 4 (third place)
Notes: The Spartans have won their last four, including a win over No. 8 Josey on Jan. 6. They beat Westside 62-45 in their last game and play at No. 2 Butler on Tuesday.
8. Josey (12-4)
Region record: 2-3 in Region 4 (fifth place)
Notes: The Eagles are the fourth team ranked from Region 4 and were on a two-game skid, with losses to Westside (61-56) and Glenn Hills (44-42) heading into Friday’s home game against Jefferson County — the score to that game wasn’t reported. They play at Harlem on Tuesday.
9. Hapeville Charter (9-5)
Region record: 4-1 in Region 6 (second place)
Notes: The Hornets are on a five-game win streak that includes a 69-62 win over No. 10 Therrell on Jan. 10. Their 73-70 road win over AAAA’s Woodward Academy capped a 3-0 week. They host Douglass on Thursday.
10. Therrell (10-6)
Region record: 4-2 in Region 6 (third place)
Notes: The Panthers are the third team ranked from Region 6, but were on a four-game skid heading into their Jan. 13 game at B.E.S.T. — that score went unreported. They beat KIPP 55-52 the next game. The play at Washington on Tuesday before hosting No. 1 South Atlanta on Friday.
Girls
1. Laney (15-1)
Region record: 6-0 in Region 4 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Wildcats were on on a 14-game win streak heading into last week, last losing to North Augusta (South Carolina) 62-56 on Nov. 22. The scores of their last two games — against Josey and Washington — have not been reported. They play Westside on Tuesday.
2. Dodge County (14-2)
Region record: 6-0 in Region 3 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Indians went 2-0 last week to extend their win streak to four. The host Southwest on Tuesday.
3. Model (13-4)
Region record: 8-0 in Region 7 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Blue Devils avenged an early-season loss to Christian Heritage by beating them 68-42 Saturday on the road, which extended their win streak to four. They play at Coosa on Tuesday.
4. Rabun County (17-1)
Region record: 5-0 in Region 8 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Wildcats are on a 15-game win streak, which includes surviving on the road last week against Banks County with a 63-62 overtime win. They host Oglethorpe County on Tuesday.
5. Vidalia (14-3)
Region record: 6-1 in Region 2 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Indians are riding a six-game win streak after beating Metter 85-70 on Friday. They host Bacon County on Tuesday.
6. Fitzgerald (11-2)
Region record: 3-1 in Region 1 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Purple Hurricane are coming off a 55-42 loss to AAAAAAA’s Tift County on Monday. They host Thomasville on Friday.
7. Heard County (14-4)
Region record: 4-0 in Region 5 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Braves are on a four-game win streak and are undefeated in the new year. They beat Jordan 43-31 on Saturday and travel to Spencer on Tuesday.
8. Bryan County (12-3)
Region record: 6-2 in Region 2 (second place)
Notes: The Lady Redskins went 3-0 last week, beating St. Vincent’s, Bacon County and Portal by an average of 35 points. They host Metter on Tuesday.
9. Washington County (8-5)
Region record: 5-2 in Region 3 (tied for second place)
Notes: The Lady Golden Hawks lost 57-45 to AAAAAAA’s Cherokee on Monday and travel to East Laures on Tuesday.
10. Dade County (13-6)
Region record: 5-3 in Region 7 (tied for third)
Notes: The Lady Wolverines went 2-1 last week, with the loss coming to No. 3 Model, 63-48. They host Pepperell on Tuesday.
