*Best player: A great player in Class A cannot be pegged easily. Maybe junior Trezman Marshall will play linebacker in college. For Clinch County in 2016, he was 33-of-72 passing for 679 yards and 14 touchdowns. He rushed for 595 yards and nine touchdowns. And he had 70 tackles and three sacks and returned an interception for a touchdown.
*Best position: Running back. The lead sled dog is Taylor County RB Lyn-J Taylor, who rushed for 1,908 yards and scored 41 touchdowns. He’s committed to Tennessee. Several had more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage, and most are excellent pass receivers, as well. They include Chris Stovall of Miller County, Javoris Smith of Twiggs County, J.P. Palmer of McIntosh County Academy, Bobby McNear of Emanuel County Institute and Malik Bonner of Chattahoochee County.
*Highly recruited: Christian Meadows of Macon County is a nightmare matchup for defensive lineman. He’s 6 feet, 3 inches and 330 pounds, and scored 78 pancake blocks in 2016. He never allowed a sack on a team that set a state record for TD passes. He is committed to Florida State. He and Taylor are the two senior four-star recruits.
*Lowly recruited: Asfar as Power 5 conferences go, that would be most everybody. Meadows, Dixon and Clinch County’s John Mincey are the only Class A public-school players rated among the top 100 seniors in Georgia.
What else is new?: Macon County and Clinch County have four players apiece on the team. That’s a fair place to start the preseason rankings.
