Girls lacrosse: West Forsyth holds off South Forsyth for area win

Led by sophomore Ella Madson the West Forsyth girls lacrosse team used an efficient offense and tight defense to earn themselves a huge 10-8 area win over county rival South Forsyth.

South got out to an early 4-2 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. West couldn’t stop Lady War Eagles attacker Camryn Klaus, while freshman goalie Kayla Casey made four early saves.

West eventually tightened on defense. The Lady Wolverines held South scoreless for the next 25 minutes.

“We gained possession of the ball and did a very good job at using our offense as a defense,” West head coach Barney Marchand said. “The fact we were able maintain possession really helped out our defense and took a big weight off their shoulders.”

Senior Kelly Guthrie had four goals and two assists, both by Madson, who added three goals of her own.

“We are really blessed to have [Ella], she’s very talented,” Marchand said. “Frankly, I am blessed to have all of them on this team.”

However, as time went on, possession play began to hurt West. Several key turnovers turned in to scoring opportunities for South, who scored five unanswered goals to pull within 10-8 with just over four minutes left in the game. Klaus scored three of the five goals, finishing with five goals and an assist.

“We knew they weren’t going to quit,” Marchand said. “They are very competitive girls and very talented.”

But in those last four minutes, South couldn’t possess the ball consistently enough. The Lady War Eagles finished with 22 turnovers, including four in those final crucial minutes of the game.

“We won the bouncing balls, we won the loose balls, we even won the rollers,” Marchand said. “That is what made the game for us.”
