Football: North Forsyth can’t stop Wolverines quarterback

WOODSTOCK – North Forsyth left its Coal Mountain magic in Raider Valley on Friday.
A week after a thrilling last-second victory, there was no drama in North’s 35-3 loss at Woodstock.
The Raiders (3-2) couldn’t stop Wolverines quarterback Garrett Bass, who compiled 296 of the team’s 326 yards of offense and accounted for all five of Woodstock’s touchdowns, four through the air and one on the ground.
“He’s an excellent player,” North head coach Robert Craft said. “He executes the plays on hand and extends broken ones.”
Win or lose, North’s offense had been effective entering Friday behind the duo of junior quarterback Ben Bales and senior wide receiver Simon Holcomb.
But Woodstock held the Raiders to just 160 yards of offense, their lowest of the season. Bales finished with just 111 yards through the air and was sacked twice. Holcomb was held to just four catches for 17 yards.
North’s only points came on a 22-yard field goal by Arthur Boyzo in the first quarter to cut Woodstock’s lead to 7-3.
Friday was North’s final test of its non-region schedule, one it had been passing for the most part, particularly after two straight comeback victories against Loganville (31-24) and Pickens County (35-31) on the team’s final possession.
North was coming off its huge comeback victory in Raider Valley over Pickens after being down by 14 points. But the Raiders didn’t have the warm embrace of their home crowd. They had to travel over 35 miles to a hostile Woodstock Stadium.
Bass started his offensive clinic with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Louis Hall with 7 minutes left in the first quarter. Boyzo made his field goal five minutes later, but it was all Bass and Woodstock from there.
Bass added touchdown passes of 42, 3 and 28 yards in the second quarter, the last just 59 seconds before the half, to give Woodstock a 28-3 lead. By halftime, Bass had passed for 208 yards and four touchdowns.
Bass capped the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown run with 3:52 left in the third quarter.
