Fayette swimmers among best in state

The Starr’s Mill girls swam to a second-place finish among teams in the AAAA and AAAAA classifications at the 2018 Georgia High School Association Swimming & Diving Championships last weekend at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.

The team’s 299 points trailed only Blessed Trinity’s 332, while Columbus finished third with 282 points, according to results posted online by the GHSA. Meet results listed here are taken from the Atlanta Swimming website.

The foursome of Kylee Bogumill, Hope Christensen, Avery McFaddin and Lauren Presley took the 4A-5A state title in the 200 freestyle relay as well as the 200 medley relay. Presley was also the champion in the 100 breaststroke and finished seventh in the 50 freestyle.

Bogumill was second in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle, while McFaddin came in third in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the individual medley. Christensen notched a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle and was eighth in the 50 freestyle. Also earning points for the Starr’s Mill girls was Allyson Phinney, who was fifth in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 butterfly.

The only other local swimmer who earned a state championship was Sandy Creek’s Gabe Bartolomei, winning the boys 100 butterfly. He also finished second in the 100 backstroke and was the only Patriot in the top 10 in any event.

McIntosh got a tenth-place finish in the girls 200 freestyle relay with Meredith Ashburn, Nanami Lillie, Morgan Stroud and Chihiro Suzuki. Ashburn came in fifth in the 50 freestyle and Lillie placed fifth in the 100 backstroke.

The only Whitewater swimmer in the top 10 was Sarah Carillo, who was tenth in the 50 freestyle.

The Starr’s Mill boys did not place among the top scoring teams but had top finishes in five events. Those included seventh in the 200 freestyle relay (Filip Borjeson, Tyler Groenig, Vlad Taylor and Michael Tucker) as well as the 400 freestyle relay (Borjeson, Taylor, Tucker and Luke Presley). Borjeson came in sixth in the 100 freestyle and Tucker was ninth in the 200 individual medley. Presley placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke.
