Daily List: Top-ranked teams this season that have lost

FootballSeven No. 1-ranked teams have lost this season. The most in a regular season occurred in 1986, when eight fell. Given that the regular season is just one-third complete, the record is likely to fall. The high number is mostly a result of the move to seven classifications and eight sets of rankings after Class A public and private are split. As recently as 1999, there were only four classifications. Another result of more classifications is smaller regions and the need for more non-region games. The top teams tend to fill those spots with dangerous opponents. Five of the No. 1 teams have lost to higher-classification teams. Here are the seven No. 1 teams that have fallen in 2016. As a bonus, the seven that lost in 2015 also are included.
