Zackery Harris knows there will be a transition period in his first season as the the head coach at Twiggs County.

He’s hoping last year’s success for the Cobras makes that transition easier. The Cobras open their first season with Harris as their head coach Aug. 25 against Toombs County.

“Last year, being 8-4 was pretty good for us. The guys learned how to work hard. They learned what it takes to win, and hopefully, we can build on that this season,” Harris said. “Confidence, that’s the difference. Once you’ve been there and you’ve done that, you have it in your mind that you can do it again. All you have to do is put in the time and the effort, and these kids have done it in the offense, and they’ve worked hard.

“Winning last year kind of gave them that taste in their mouth. Hopefully, they can pull together, and we can try to make a run at it again.”

Harris spent eight seasons as the head coach at Hancock Central and was the defensive coordinator for Twiggs County last year. He was promoted to take over the Cobras’ program after Ashley Harden was hired at Northeast.

Harris pointed to lineman Markell Carswell and linebacker Thomas Curry as leaders for this year’s team.

“Markell Carswell, a senior center. We look for him to bring together the young offensive live,” Harris said. “We graduated a lot of kids last year, and a lot of young guys are on that offensive line, and we look for Markell to do a good job of helping them to jell together.

“On the defensive side, we have Thomas Curry, who plays the stack linebacker for us. He’s also a senior, and he will help us to solidify our defense, as well.”
