Best player in school history: Region 3-A teams

Not much can be said about Herschel Walker that hasn’t been. His old high school field is named for him. Not many players are honored with that, at least not so soon.
Walker rushed for 3,167 yards and scored 45 touchdowns, both setting state records, for the 1979 Johnson County team that won Class A. The rest was history, not the least of which was his 1982 Heisman Trophy-winning season at Georgia.
Walker no longer holds the Georgia high school record for touchdowns. That belongs to another former player from the current Region 3-A, Washaun Ealey of Emanuel County Institute. Ealey scored 58 in 2007.
Walker also is not the only former player from the current 3-A to hold a major state record. Junior Snead’s 35 TD passes in 1991 were the standard until broken by Robert Johnson of Americus in 2000.
And Walker is not the only former NFL player from the current 3-A. Demarcus Dobbs played five years in the league for the 49ers and Seahawks. And Allen Bailey still can be found on Sundays suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs.
