basket-ball-1343018_1920The big story on the girls side of the classification during the weekend was the Beach Lady Bulldogs taking over the top spot in the rankings after beating formerly No. 1 Johnson-Savannah, 52-49.

The two Savannah teams have traded blows twice this season and had split games. Johnson won at Beach; Beach won at Johnson. Round 3 was played at Johnson, and it did not disappoint.

With less than a minute remaining in the game, Beach 5-foot-8 junior Ja’Brekia Bass made a contested layup to tie the game at 44 and send it into overtime.

Bass was not finished. The Beach forward scored seven of her team’s eight points in overtime, and Beach had its second victory against its rival.

“I love playing in games like that,” Bass told the Savannah Morning News. “I get excited and go after it. I love being in situations like that. It’s what basketball is all about.”

Bass finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Beach will host Jenkins on Tuesday night. Johnson will travel to Islands.
