The University of North Carolina at Wilmington men’s basketball team is losing an MVP.

Days after South Forsyth senior Evan Cole won top individual honors at the GACA North/South Senior All-Star Game, the 6-foot-7 forward announced Wednesday afternoon he is no longer committed to the Seahawks.

“I would like to thank UNCW for all that they have done for me over the past year,” Cole wrote on Twitter. “Due to the coaching change at North Carolina Wilmington, I have been officially granted my release. I will pursue opportunities at other colleges.”

Cole is the latest in UNCW’s 2017 recruiting class to be granted a release following the departure of head coach Kevin Keatts, who took the same position at N.C. State. Keatts led UNCW to back-to-back CAA regular season and conference tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, and his name had been mentioned when more glamorous head coaching positions opened up the past two seasons.

UNCW is set to introduce long-time UNC assistant C.B. McGrath as its new head coach fresh off helping the Tar Heels defeat Gonzaga in the NCAA tournament championship.

Cole won’t play for McGrath, but he won’t lack for potential suitors. Prior to verbally committing to the Seahawks, Cole received 19 scholarship offers last summer in a matter of three months. Surely, some will be interested again.

After an impressive senior season in which he averaged 20 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks a game, and an MVP all-star game performance, Cole might have some new places to consider too.
