Projected top players by position: Defensive backfields full of 4-star seniors
There are 38 Georgia seniors who are consensus four-star recruits. Nine of them play cornerback or safety in high school. Each of those made this list of Georgia’s top-10 defensive backs, with one exception. Greater Atlanta Christian’s Kyler McMichael, primarily a running back, will be featured later this week with two-way players.
The only mere three-stars in the group are Chris Smith and Charlie Thomas, both probably underrated.
*Derrik Allen, Lassiter (6-2, 210):Allen, a Notre Dame commit, is the highest-rated safety prospect in Georgia by a wide margin at No. 6 nationally at the position. Allen had 37 solo tackles and two interceptions last season. He averaged 29.1 yards per touch in rare appearances on offense and special teams. Allen was first-team all-region in 4-AAAAAAA and second-team all-state (GSWA).
*Trey Dean, Dutchtown (6-2, 180): Dean is the consensus No. 22 safety prospect nationally and is committed to Tennessee. His team struggled last season, and he was named only honorable-mention all-region but should be a major factor in 2017.
*Tre Douglas, Eagle’s Landing Christian (6-2, 195): Douglas, a cornerback, allowed only two receptions in his zone and none when covering man-to-man last season, when ELCA won the Class A private-school title. He was unanimous first-team all-state. Douglas has committed to Vanderbilt.
*Jaycee Horn, Alpharetta (6-1, 170): Horn is a top-250 national recruit whose favorites reportedly are Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. Horn, a cover corner, broke up 24 passes and intercepted six.
*Quindarious Monday, Carver-Atlanta(6-4, 175): A top-250 national recruit, Monday is primarily a safety in high school but could play multiple positions in college. He was first-team Class AAAAA all-state last season, when he had 90 tackles and three interceptions. He also had 11 catches for 309 yards and four touchdowns. Monday is committed to Auburn.
*Otis Reese, Lee County (6-4, 205): Reese was first-team all-state last season, when he had 11 tackles for losses and two interceptions for Lee County. He’s rated the No. 8 OLB prospect nationally but is a high school safety. He is committed to Michigan.
*Myles Sims, Westlake (6-2, 173): Sims is a top-20 cornerback who is committed to Michigan. He had four interceptions and broke up 10 passes. He made first-team all-region in 2-AAAAAAA and honorable mention all-state for a state semifinal team.
*Chris Smith, Hapeville Charter (5-11, 170): Smith had six interceptions last season on a Class AA semifinal team and was first-team all-region. A cornerback, Smith roamed the secondary with William Poole III, who signed with Georgia. Smith has committed to join him in Athens.
*Christian Tutt, Thomson (5-11, 190): Playing for the Class AAAAA runner-up, Tutt had 85 tackles overall and intercepted four passes. He returned four kicks for touchdowns. He’s rated among the top 25 cornerbacks nationally and reportedly is an Alabama lean.
*Charlie Thomas, Thomasville (6-2, 180): Thomas was Class AA first-team all-state and the Region 1-AA defensive player of the year in 2016, when he had 44 solo tackles at safety. He also had 353 yards from scrimmage on offense. Thomas is committed to Georgia Tech.
